Andy Sheehan
Andy Sheehan is an in-depth investigative and enterprise reporter based in Pittsburgh, PA. His reports cover various social issues, criminal justice, education, and the environment. He is most passionate, however, about exposing waste and corruption. Many policies and laws have been affected and changed as a direct result of Andy’s work.
Andy Sheehan received his education from Columbia University in the City of New York, an Ivy League research university that is consistently ranked as one of the top schools in the nation. He graduated in 1979 with a Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature/Letters.
For over nine years, Andy Sheehan worked as a reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. His reports covered city hall, the police, politics, business, and economic development. During his time at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Andy developed an extensive network of sources and contacts while earning a reputation as both a strong reporter and as a sharp writer.
In 2001, Andy Sheehan published his first book, Chasing the Hawk: Looking for My Father, Finding Myself. The book is a memoir of Andy’s relationship with his famous father, Dr. George Sheehan. Dr. Sheehan was a physician, runner, and New York Times bestselling author. Chasing the Hawk describes Andy’s experience growing up as one of 12 children in the Sheehan home and longing for the approval of his father well into his adult years. The memoir has a 5-star rating on Amazon and has been acclaimed as “one of the best father/son books ever.”
Andy Sheehan is currently working as an investigative reporter for KDKA-TV, a CBS affiliate television station in Pittsburgh, PA, a position he has held since 1992. Recently, Andy has been covering the Pittsburgh Public School District and their request for tax increases, despite racking up a seemingly excessive amount of money in travel expenses the previous year. In every story, Andy’s primary goal is to uncover the truth and inform the public about what they deserve to know.
Andy Sheehan’s work has been honored with numerous awards, including an Emmy in 2010 for his report “Help for Haiti.” He was also nominated for Emmy awards in 2014 and 2016. For his outstanding achievements in broadcasting, he also received an Edward R. Murrow award from the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA), as well as a Gabriel, Pennsylvania Broadcaster Association award, and a Golden Quill Award. He has also served as a board member for the Dick’s Sporting Goods City of Pittsburgh Marathon, as well as for Jubilee Soup Kitchen.
In October of 2018, Andy Sheehan covered the Pittsburgh synagogue shooting at the Tree of Life Synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood. Although he had covered numerous horrific events in the past, this tragedy was the worst of his career. It was also unique because it took place in Andy’s neighborhood— only 300 yards from his home. Despite the atrocity of the events that day, Andy says his community has become closer and stronger as a result.
In addition to his successful career as a reporter and writer, Andy Sheehan is a husband and father to two sons.
