Learning how to run isn’t something that is supposed to be hard. You just need to go faster than your usual jogging pace. However, achieving the proper running form is a bit more involved than this. Having proper form while you’re running is important because you’re going to get better results and you’ll be less likely to get injured.

Head Position

It might seem odd to bring up head position when talking about running form, but it actually does matter. You need to make sure that you’re not looking down at your feet when you run. Gaze forward and don’t tilt your chin upward or downward. Your ears should also be lined up with your shoulders so this means that you can’t have your head too far forward while you’re running.

Shoulder Position

Should position is going to play a role when it comes to proper running form, too. You need to make sure that you open up your shoulders when you run. Pull your shoulders back a bit so that you can have better form overall. You want your shoulders to move independently of your torso so that when you step forward with your left leg, your right shoulder-blade is moving forward.

Arm Position

What should you do with your arms when you’re running? Try to keep them at a 90-degree angle for ideal results. Attempt to make your fists move from your chin to your hips as you’re running. It makes it easier to propel your body.

Also, remember not to squeeze your hands. It’s actually better to keep your hands relaxed. You can make a fist with your hands if you want to, but just don’t tense them up.

Torso Position

Do your best to keep a tight core while you’re running. When you’re moving forward, you should torque shift toward the side of your legs that are moving forward. If your right leg is moving forward, then you torque shift to the right to propel yourself forward with more momentum.

Hip Position

You want to lean into the run slightly with your hips. Your torso is going to be a little bit forward of your hips. This will allow you to use your hip base and your glutes for power.
